Jokamiehenoikeus

Definition

The right to roam, or everyman's rights: the customary freedom to enjoy nature, with limits and responsibilities. Finnish texts now also use the form jokaisenoikeus, everyone's right. According to the Ministry of the Environment's booklet, it lets people walk, ski, cycle and pick berries on other people's land, and camp briefly, but not enter yards or damage nature. Fires need the landowner's permission. See also: kansallispuisto, and the guide The Right to Roam in Finland: A General Guide.
