Niemi

Definition

A peninsula or cape, a piece of land projecting into water. The word ends many place names, including Rovaniemi, the main town of Lapland. On a lake map a niemi often separates two bays, so a short distance by water can be a long walk or drive around it. Look for it with lahti and salmi to read the shape of the shoreline.
