Question hub
Do I need a car in Finland?
The answer
Not in the cities, where trains, trams and buses are reliable, but a car or arranged transfers make rural stays, the Lakeland and the north much easier. Finland is long and thinly populated, with about 5.65 million people according to Statistics Finland, so public transport can be infrequent outside the main lines. Trains and buses still reach many places, and cottages often have a host who can advise on transfers. If you drive in winter, use suitable winter tyres.
