Should I rely on offline maps?

The answer

Use them as a backup, not as your only map. In remote areas of the Lakeland, the archipelago and the north, mobile coverage can weaken, and cold drains phone batteries quickly. Download offline maps before you leave a connected area, keep your phone warm, and carry a paper map and compass for important routes. For boating you need nautical charts, and for hiking a topographic or trail map, because a road map hides terrain and water.
