Region
Uusimaa and the Helsinki Region
Uusimaa lies on the southern coast and contains the capital, Helsinki, along with neighbouring cities and a long coastline of bays, islands and forest. It is the country's main gateway, with the principal airport, harbours and rail connections. The region combines urban life with accessible nature, including coastal parks and old towns along the shore. Design, architecture, markets and museums sit close to the sea. It makes a natural starting point for exploring the rest of Finland, and a short trip can easily mix city and outdoors. Uusimaa runs along the Gulf of Finland, with Helsinki on a peninsula and the surrounding cities forming a continuous urban belt that gives way to forest, farmland and a long indented coast. Offshore, rocky islets and fortress islands can be reached by boat, and eastward and westward along the shore are old wooden towns and former ironworks villages. Rail, tram, metro and ferry networks make car-free exploration realistic. Summer brings long light evenings and open-air life, with winter offering a quieter, darker city with ice and snow along the shoreline. Practical tip: use Helsinki as a base for day trips before heading north, and verify ferry schedules for island destinations because many services run mainly in the summer. If you only have a few days, combine one day in the city with one day on the coast.
