V
Vuori
Definition
The Finnish word for mountain or hill. In Finland most such heights are modest, so a vuori is a landmark rather than a climbing challenge. The word is used in place names across the country, often for wooded hills that rise above the surrounding lakes and bogs. For rounded, treeless uplands in the north, Finnish prefers tunturi. Contours on a topographic map show how steep a vuori really is. See also: tunturi, harju, and the guide How to Read a Map of Finland.
