L
Lahti
Definition
A bay or inlet of a lake or the sea. It is also the name of a city in southern Finland. The Swedish equivalent on coastal maps is vik. A lahti usually offers shelter from open water and often holds a harbour, a beach or a jetty, which makes it a natural place to land a boat or start a swim. On the road, curves around a lahti make distances longer than the straight line. See also: niemi, salmi, and the guide How to Read a Map of Finland.
