L

Lappi

Definition

The Finnish name for Lapland, the large northern part of the country, much of it north of the Arctic Circle. The word covers a historical province and a modern administrative region, and travellers use it loosely for the far north. The landscape is forest, bog, rounded fells and wide rivers, with small communities far apart. It is also part of the Sami homeland, so respect herders and local customs.
