L

Löyly

Definition

The steam that rises when water is thrown onto hot sauna stones. It is central to the sauna experience, and Finns talk about its quality with real attention: a gentle löyly feels soft, while a harsh one can sting. Benches near the ceiling are hotter than lower ones, so beginners start low. It is polite to ask others before throwing more water.
