S
Salmi
Definition
A strait or narrow passage of water between two larger bodies of water or islands. The Swedish equivalent is sund. Salmet are natural crossing points for ferries and bridges, and on a lake they can funnel wind and current, so paddling through one needs care. When you see salmi on a map, expect a narrowing, a possible crossing and stronger flow than in the open lake. See also: lahti, niemi, and the guide Lakeland Finland: A Practical Guide to Lake Travel.
