Saamelaiset
Definition
The Sami, an Indigenous people whose homeland extends across northern Finland and neighbouring countries. Northern Sami, Inari Sami and Skolt Sami are all used in parts of Finnish Lapland, and signs there are often multilingual. Reindeer herding belongs to Sami traditions, though most reindeer in Finland are semi-domesticated and owned by herders. Learn about Sami culture from Sami sources and ask before photographing people. See also: Lappi, and the guide Lapland and the Northern Lights: A General Guide.
