Savusauna

Definition

A smoke sauna, a traditional type heated by a stove without a chimney, with the smoke released before bathing. UNESCO lists smoke saunas among the forms of Finnish sauna, alongside electric, wood-heated and infra-red ones. The heat is soft and the smell is distinct. A smoke sauna must be heated for hours and ventilated before use, so experience one at a place that runs it safely. See also: sauna, löyly, and the guide Finnish Sauna Culture: A Guide for Visitors.
